Through The Mist - Tiltbrush

  • Imogen Mangle

An excerpt from a picture-book-to-be written by Sharron Fortnam, interpreted through the use of 2D images in a 3D Virtual Reality space. Software used: Tiltbrush

Concentrating on environmental storytelling to set a comfortable, familiar tone.
Several assets were designed to look different when viewed from behind, giving a little life and motion to an otherwise static scene, and engaging the curious viewer with the element of surprise.
First prototype: a small bubble environment made using Tiltbrush's native tools
Second prototype: A box of imported 2D transparent PNGs contains the viewer. I struggled with ingrained habits of drawing edges and layers that are necessary in my typical comics work, but not here in Virtual Reality.
Third and final prototype: the Peeping Tom Simulator. Having overcome my need to draw artificial edges (such as that of a canvas or comics panel), I discovered a new flaw in my thinking: Just because you can't see the walls, floors and ceilings of rooms from outside their windows doesn't mean they don't exist. After realising this, I became able to think in 3 spatial dimensions whilst drawing in 2.
