TYPO/SIGN/CITY*

  • Bogumil Bezel

Each chapter of this bookwork depicts the typographic differences of various cities, focusing on shop signs, environmental typography, and architecture. Essays within the publication elaborate on these subjects, drawing the reader to reflect on the influence these outlined elements have on a perception of the city as a whole. Within the work writings with a technical approach are complemented by philosophical reflections made by Italo Calvino in his book ‘Invisible Cities’. Calvino's prose poems, describing fictitious cities, can be read as parables or meditations on culture, language, time, memory, death, or the general nature of human experience – and are explored through typographic experimentation.

As a music and sound enthusiast I could not forget about this beautiful sense of hearing and how it affects our perception. Along the publication there is a playlist with songs which are representative for each of the countries mentioned in this project. This selection is accessible under the QR code below.
