Typography and Block Printing

  • Lewis Coull

A typographic brief consisting of creating a new variation for the typeface family Bodoni and adapting it to relate to the word 'Truth'. The project was to be completed using block printing methods. I found the statement about truth having a 'fog of uncertainty' surrounding it to linger with me and impact my progression within this miniature project.

I wanted the text to appear light and almost transparent so chose to remove the inside of the text to convey this. The use of a halo around the text was also linked to symbolism of angels and purity which are closely linked to the idea of truth.

I also wanted the ink to appear rough and flawed in certain areas to depict this sense of a fog and uncertainty surrounding the word as if 'truth' was the only clear image on the artwork.
I chose to create two prints for this minature project as I wanted both a black and white version to represent the clarity of truth. I also felt the two worked well together and could help showcase the purity of truth and the 'fog of uncertainty' through the background.
