Ubu Roi (Live Brief)

  • Jordan Smith

During my second year, we were given a module that was going to introduce us to filming and editing. For PQ 2019, the Common Design Project will serve as the catalyst for a global discussion between students and educators as they explore and create designs for Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry. Organised by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and realised by the Arts and Theatre Institute, The Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space is the largest international exhibition and festival event dedicated to scenography, performance design and theatre architecture.

The theme allocated to us was Act 3 Scene 2 which depicts Papa Ubu showing his superiority and power by killing all of the Nobles, Financiers and Magistrates and gaining all their wealth. My key role during this project was the design and creation of the set and the set dressing. Along side the production we were required to cut and edit the clips we had shot, being the only member of the team who knew how to use the editing software I took upon this role teaching the others along the way.
