Uncanny Valley

  • Ellen Harlow

This project was created to educate children about the Uncanny Valley; the discomfort you feel when you encounter something that looks almost human but isn’t convincing enough. With the rapid changes in technology humanoid robots are likely to become more apparent in the near future so I wanted to bring the research conducted on the Uncanny Valley to a wider audience. I focused on key names such as Masahiro Mori, Astrid M. Rosenthal-Von Der Putten and Fabian Grabenhorst. I personally find most aspects of the Uncanny Valley absolutely terrifying so this project really helped me to understand why I feel this way. The outcome is an interactive piece that takes a character through a literal valley where she encounters signposts at a variety of points revealing the stages of the valley and information about them.
