For this group exhibition, I captured ways to raise awareness of those with mental health conditions. I researched symptoms which individuals display that may go ‘unnoticed’. Here, I have chosen to expose symptoms within six images, combining a few mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders and schizophrenia, that have an impact on a person’s mood, thinking and behaviour. The symptoms I have depicted in my photographs include withdrawal, appetite changes, confused thinking, nervousness, feeling disconnected and mood swings. Each extremely important symptom is a way people reach out to others, but in many cases they can be missed altogether. In this case, I want to be able to encourage my audience to look out for these signs, as well as act upon them, such as asking if help is needed, rather than dismissing those who may be experiencing the darkest moments of their lives. The way I have taken these photographs, in a dark studio with just one source of light, emphasises how lonely and empty those with mental health conditions can feel; and this is further enhanced by the amount of dead space each image possesses.
