unravelled

  • Rose Cordery

The project ‘unravelled’ comments on the systemic oppression of women, and the fetishisation of women and femininity under the male gaze. Within this, I explored the association of women with floral passivity and meekness, focusing on entangled structures, loose and expressive marks to present a release of tension from the confinements of rigid expectation and ordered florals. There's a confessional tone to the body of work, exploring a sense of unravelling poetic florals and wild natural imagery through both illustrative work and expressive mark making. This collection incorporates digitally printed natural fabrics and up cycled remnants, in addition to techniques such as CAD embroidery, Irish embroidery, embellishing, hand stitch, hand manipulation, photography, devoré, procion printing and jacquard weave. Designed to be applied to the body in a couture context, these fashion fabrics are intended to express a sense of wearable art.
