Versus Monthly Challenge: Cowboy Bebop

  • Ryzard Akita

So for July's design challenge we decided to create our own 'motion poster' from a TV series/movie of our choosing. My idea was to design a poster that would fit within a series for Cowboy Bebop, one thing I loved about this anime is how each character has a memorable scene so the character I decided to focus on was...

That's right Ed the Genius (┌・。・)┌

The idea was very simple, I wanted to recreate a memorable scene within the silhouette of said character. The creation of the silhouette was time consuming but very straight forward, using the pen tool on illustrator I traced Ed’s profile making it into a shape I could experiment with.
Spoiler alert, I’m going to be discussing some plot points from the anime, but let's be real if you haven’t seen this anime by now you’re really missing out.
So moving on swiftly, the scene I chose is the one where Ed leaves.

* a pause whilst I cry*

This scene was beautifully animated and the colours they used really set the tone.
So that’s exactly what I focused on. To help break it down I created a palette, this quickly made me realise that I couldn’t get away with a cheeky gradient
So decided to flip the table and pull a fricking Van Gogh (┛✧Д✧))┛彡┻━┻

Okay… so my version is probably an insult in comparison to the amazing artist, especially that I decided to use the mop brush… you know that one that no one really uses on illustrator… forgive me.

Nonetheless! With limited time this is all I could do and when combined with the silhouette I was quite chuffed with the result.
For the final touches I decide to chuck the final shapes and paths into Aftereffects and control their position to make the clouds move, I also added a cheeky shooting star (just because).

The final result…
