In 2016, I was fed up with all the fake faces and photoshopped bodies on social media. I grew up in a generation raised by the Internet and I realized after my high school diploma how much all of this content affected me growing up as a woman of color in France. I decided I wanted to create a platform where I could try to give a different vision of what it's like to be a woman nowadays.

I started writing portraits about women I met and I take analog pictures of them with no camera on a tumblr I called #VRAIESMEUFS ("real girl" in french slang) and I started asking what does it mean to be a real girl and do people have any particular definition. To me, "vraies meufs" was this moment in the day, where you are not working, not in the social frenzy of life, when you take your bra and make up off and you are just chilling with a friend, not worrying about being someone you are not. This is the kind of moment I wanted to get with this project.

I learned a lot from this project :

  • I got a lot better at writing and taking photos, especially with analog cameras
  • I created a team of wonderful girls and theys to help me and learned to manage every thing with every one
  • I created valuable collaboration with amazing brands, projects and associations (events with brands, collaboration with other medias, donations to associations from money gained to our events...)
  • I learned how to organize and produce great events
  • I curated audio contents and playlists, making me learn how to always stay curious and find new goldies
  • I kept being consistant years after years, even if I paused the project during a year during Covid.

I just kept going back and relaunching the project since September 2021. I went to South of France to share more stories and I would love to get more and create more collaborations in the future. I am looking forward to what we will accomplish this year.

Great accomplishments :

  • I won an award on the "Palmarès des femmes influentes 2018" (Influential women Award)
  • I collaborated with the Gurls Talk platform for the Gurls Talk Paris Live Event
  • I launched an event with Nike during the female Football World Cup
  • We launched an IGTV serie called Gurlhood where we interviewed women about different topics
