As the effects of climate change intensify, the local inhabitants are forced to combat the ever-present wildfires with the limited resources available. During the summer of 2023, Rhodes was ravaged by the worst wildfires in the island's history, burning over 18,000 hectares of land. Homes and businesses were destroyed with families displaced to other parts of the island, exposing the lack of personnel and equipment available to reduce natural disasters in Greece However, on the 18th of July 2023, the residents of the island put their lives on hold to volunteer, organizing on a grassroots level to create an alternative support network.
