My latest project is concerned with the biased design of the algorithm.
From extensive research, the algorithm frames black women into stereotypes that were normalised at the time of Artificial Intelligence design and creation. The internet was designed at a time when there were polemic tropes associated with the black woman which also filtered through into stereotypes and into Western media, beginning at the forefront of narrative art and popular culture, Hollywood. These tropes often involve the erasure of the black woman through fetishisation and the reduction to an object or service for the patriarchal society.
I have aimed here to create a dataset of visual interpretations of these women in a historical and hyperbolised form to display the identity of the black woman through the lens of Big Data, the algorithm and effectively the computer.
My project is meant to be the expression or endgame of the algorithm's flawed design and the artificial intelligence, which rears its head through the inability to recognise the actual humanness of the woman of colour, specifically the black woman.
