YANKII Keychain series

  • Femi Williams

Yanki culture in Japan emerged in the 1980s and 1990s. Yankis are rebellious teenagers known for their distinctive fashion, including oversized clothing and dyed hair. They ride customized motorcycles called "yankee bikes" and often form close-knit groups or gangs. Yankis display a non-conformist attitude and engage in minor delinquency. While the subculture has evolved, it still exists in pockets of Japanese society today. This project was an ode to the culture, which fought against the norms of Japanese society at the time despite the harsh shunning received from conventional Japanese culture. Keychains were a prominent product during the time, often purchased to be adorned on jeans or mobile flip phones in which teenagers would compete or compare to have the best and or most unique keychains.
