#YESBALLGAMES - Denis Law Legacy Trust.

  • David James Doull

The Denis Law Legacy Trust recently joined forces with Aberdeen Greenspace and Aberdeen Play Forum to launch a campaign that resulted in Aberdeen City Council removing hundreds of No Ball Games signs from across the city. Denis was assisted by former teammate Mike Summerbee to carry out the ceremonial removal of the first sign and help put the fun back into the city’s parks and community spaces. Denis said: “This is a brilliant initiative and one that is long overdue. It will open up community spaces throughout Aberdeen enabling kids to kick a ball about freely with their friends, which is really important. The local authority should be commended for their work to remove these signs". This launched the YBG Streetwear apparel range. This would be used to both help raise money for the charity while also adding becoming additional elements to reinforce the message - the symbol of the opponent is now the apparel of the player #YesBallGames. By creating a series of designs here I used elements using traditional typesetting techniques with Letraset transfer while taking my main inspiration from urban textures and elements. Other elements of urban communication were added taking iconography from Margret Calvert and Jock Kinneir's famous Transport typography to create a series of street-ready designs.
