Zebracadabra

  • Bethany Inman
Brief:
To illustrate four spreads of Kes Gray’s new book Zebracadabra, a story aimed at children up to 5 years old.
Concept:
I wanted to make sure that my characters were friendly and appealing, while conveying the personality of each character in their facial expressions and body language.
Solution:
Soft shapes and an organic texture are combined with bright colours to create an age-appropriate outcome.
Initially I created line-art for each animal, before applying texture, adding shadows and then removing the harsh line-art, which gives depth and a softness to the designs.
I chose to use a white stock for the book, to emphasise the illustration style and make the textures pop. As the book is targeted to children up to 5 years of age, the copy type is easy to read and is paired with a more fluid, hand-written typeface to highlight dialogue within the text.
Zebracadabra is the main focus on the front and back; these relatively minimal covers felt appropriate for the target age group, as well as not feeling too busy and complimenting the spreads inside.
