Advice needed regarding outsourced work. How do you exactly handle that? I'd love to hear about your experiences!

I am currently working on a rebrand project and I need to outsource the illustrative part of the job to someone else.

In my case, the client doesn't know any illustrators, so I plan to take care of the whole research process, since I am acting as art director and designer, and will give guidelines to the illustrator. Is it something that you did in the past? And in case you did, did you charge to the client the time spent researching?

What is the best process according to your experience?
What are your thoughts about showing a candidates list and discuss it with the client, shortlist few together, have introductory calls with them and then make a final choice?
Is it common use to ask the illustrator in this case for a referral fee?

Thank you so much in advance guys.
Cheers!

  • Hi Guya,

I would say yes you can charge the client based on the time you spent on it, like generally it's Ok to charge for research as an art director. Asking a referral fee from the illustrator honestly feels like a greedy move, that's not how I would recommend to have relationships with other creatives.
