Advise needed! Any advise or suggestions that you would give to a design student setting out for an internship in a creative team?

I'm preparing a presentation to present to students to advise them on how to apply for a fashion/creative internships and what to have ready when applying.

Any suggestions for a captivating portfolio/CV? Have there been some things that you would like your interns to be better prepared for?

Any feedback or suggestions would be much appreciated!

  • Hi Meagan,

based on my experience people often don't even know how to write their CV and put together their portfolio, so showing them just that basics but done well would be the very first thing. The other is like managing expectations and give a reality what they can expect in each industry. Most of times they have no even clue about salary ranges.
  • Hey Meagan, one thing I would say is that one of the most important things you can get from an internship is understanding. An understanding of how roles work together, what it's actually like on the ground. So maximising conversations, with the ambition to learn would be a key one! In terms of CV/Portfolio, I would say, either keep the design really simple, black and white - clear and easily digestable OR create a standout design, but don't sit in the middle of that eg. a bit of colour and odd fonts. And don't feel the need to put every bit of work experience you've done on there - just one page with the relevent stuff! Hope that helps, Lex x
