Any songwriters who have tips on recording demos from home, any tips, recommended mics, recommended music software? Thank you in advance!

  • Ableton for software. I would recommend progressing to logic and or studio one from there.
It depends on what kind of style of music really, if you’re working with MIDI then logic, If you want to create your own loops and samples then ableton (which also had MIDI functions).
That’s an unbiased insight into the world of DAWs but I have to share that Maschine with the controller acts as a standalone application and third party. So if you made a song in any daw sequencer such as ableton or logic you can add Maschine as a vst plug-in.
  • @Claudia A yes, I used the Blue to record vocals in Mornings. Thanks! :) What voice type do you have? I'm a soprano and I think it does pretty good job not making it sound too thin or sharp. It's also about mixing of course but even pre-mixing it sounds good. Of course there are other mics, I find the SM to be a tad boomy and dark for recording but I like it a lot for performance.
  • @Florie Namir is that the mic you used for recording your song Mornings? I like how clear it picks up your voice it sounds really good
  • @Phoebe Murdoch Thank you I will look into the mic recommendation, I was under the impression you can only get Logic Pro if you have a apple laptop/desktop so I have been looking at other music software. I will definitely message you if I have other queries!
  • I'm using AKG 214 condenser microphone which is good for a home studio but if you're just starting out it's good to start with a USB mic just to create demos.
  • @Claudia A Yes USB are good as a start but I'm also looking to upgrade. And I've heard a lot about the Audio Technica At2020 Cardioid Condenser Mic, it's quite affordable and I've heard the quality is really good
  • @Divianne Georges I have watched reviews of the Blue Yeti it seems really good, I currently have a maono USB set and it’s just not the greatest. I have GarageBand on my phone but I need good software for the laptop so will look into ableton also. Thank you so much!
  • Heya! I've recorded a couple of demos using a Blue Yeti Mic (USB cable) and Ableton/Garageband. With other standard mics (i.e Audio Technica At2020) you'd need a pre-amp like a Focusrite Scarlette interface to plug in your computer. N.1 tip I was given to improve the recording quality is to avoid putting your mic in the corner of your room :)
