  • @Davina Ajana actually, you inspired me to launch a proper COVID-19 challenge. Check it out: https://runmags.page.link/got-balls
  • If the magazine is not just a hobby, you need to sell advertising. The value proposition to advertisers involves readers. Go hard for niche, find a core group of readers who love your content, grow the readership by word of mouth.
Don't publish on platforms like Issuu ("if it's free, you are the product"). Build a simple magazine website on Wordpress or Umbraco (preferably Umbraco because that will give you less problems with conflicting plugins down the road). If your content is truly uniqe and attractiv, monetize content with a paywall from the start.
Use RunMags (full disclosure; it my product) to set up portals where people can subscribe and pay for their subscriptions. Use our CRM to manage the subscribers, demographics, and weekly email newsletters.
Also, use our advertiser CRM to keep track of clients, contracts and ad bookings.
We're currently offering a COVID-19 relief program where we are waiving our onboarding fee as well as the first six monthly fees. Check it out here:

  • Hey Davina

Great work on taking steps to publish. Very exciting!

I don't have any personal experience in this field but I know @Ali Foroughi is doing some beautiful work with JUNGLE (which I believe he started on a budget?) and may be happy to lend an ear if he's got a spare second.

    Best of luck!
  • Not really a personal tip, but Glug London are hosting a talk on the subject of mag/zine publishing in March. Maybe not be the detailed advice you're after but it might be of interest and there are speakers from It's Nice That and Stack. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/glug-london-creation-to-publication-tickets-96943150573
  • Take your time to get it right, host it online in platforms like issuu.
Print-wise either find a good one online, or see if a local printer could be interested by the projct and propose you interesting rates!
  • You can publish as easily either as a pdf or using a platform like issuu. When it comes to print it depends on the quality of printing but the distribution can be a little harder, depends on whether you will be charging and if you are you have to research stockists or distributors.
The design as already mentioned is most robustly created in Adobe Indesign.
  • Hi, yes! You can design your own zine as DIY or use software InDesign. You can print everything yourself or ordered online. You might need to do a research for printing prices.
