Anyone here has done some experience in working on children's books?

Just wondering as an illustrator, do you need to get an agent/publisher to represent you and your client before starting the project?

  • Hey Heedayah, I'm not the most experienced, but I know a little bit about the kids book world.
It really depends what you want to do:
If you want to illustrate someone else's story, you can submit your portfolio straight to publishers. Most have submissions pages on their websites, it's best to look at the books they produce and contact publishers who you think you'll fit in with.

Some of the big publishers only take submissions from agents, so you would need to find an agent first. Agents can be super hard to get, or they can snap you up fast if they love your work. I've been trying for a couple of years without much luck but it's worth a go. They usually have websites and submissions guidelines too.

If you want to write your own story and illustrate it, you can just get going! Make the thing you want to make :) You can take it to a publisher once you have a story written and some artwork (maybe a storyboard and a page or two, definitely not the whole book!). Or you can make the whole thing and self publish.

It's a competitive industry but it's a fun one. Hope this helps and best of luck!
