Art gallery representation. Is there a “best” way to start a conversation with galleries? Work aside, what should you know before hand?

Open submissions and competitions are a way forward, but my question is about how to approach a gallery that you have researched and is a good fit for you and your work.

Is there a formula for an opening email or is it best to call/visit? What questions should I expect and what are the essentials to know before reaching out?

Answers from those working at an art gallery and working artists preferred.

  • @Koye Odejinmi Thanks for your reply. Makes sense to go show your face and speak to people first.
  • Not really, each gallery will be different but its best to start with informal conversations. It's rare that a gallery will take you on just from seeing your portolio. Be prepared to spend time developing a relationship, maybe working with them on smaller projects first
