Grit at the RA summer exhibitionMy work has been selected for the RA summer exhibition 2021. Open to the public from 22nd September until 2nd January.

Grit objects. Orchestra 1"lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting, and...stop thinking! Just ask yourself whether the work has enabled you to "walk about" into the hitherto unknown world." Wassily Kandinsky. Orchestra 1 is the first Grit collection of decorative objects with a focus on music and graphics. Marks on pages and pots are responses to instruments in music. From Hip Hop to Classical sounds. I'll put it out there as a marker. I want to be represented by a gallery and to be in art exhibitions. Th
  • Grit short animation
Grit short animationThe studio is still closed here in London, so I am working on mini projects to occupy the time until we are back up and running. This is a very short, seven second animation I made yesterday. Smashing things and making pots is where it's at. The frames for this sequence were created in Illustrator, put together in Animate and edited in Premier Pro. I am new to using Animate but enjoy filming, editing and content creation, almost as much as sitting at the wheel, making pots in real time.
  • Grit Short Surface Design
Grit Short Surface DesignGrit short video. Typically I sketch and then develop ideas digitally with Adobe apps. Making pots is off the table at the moment, but it hasn’t stopped me from creating surface designs for large pots when we are back up and running. I’m very keen to expand out of dipping glazes. I studied fine art at university and was a designer before setting up Grit. It’s time to put some of that education to good use. Edited in Adobe Premier Pro. Soundtrack licence purchased from Adobe Stock Audio.
  • Grit Short Big Bowl
Grit Short Big BowlA short 30 second vid, showing the sequence of making a big tableware bowl. From coning up the clay to opening, pulling and shaping with the kidney tool. Shot on my iPhone, edited in Adobe Premier Pro.
  • Grit short
Grit shortA short video, pulling handles for cups. In the beginning, my creative career didn't mean a whole lot to professional potters unless I was competent with basic techniques. I wanted their respect, and had to put in the hours of work making small repeat forms. Learning the basics shows consideration for the craft, but sometimes I think it might have been a deviation away from creative expression. None the less, now I have the choice of what to do with these skills. Here is a short video showi

  • Grit x O'dell's studios
Grit x O'dell's studiosI was recently asked by Tom O’Dell to showcase GRIT objects in his shoreditch based Open Plan studio. Part of any business, including ceramics is finding an audience, building partnerships and a client list. I am new to this aspect of work, so it was amazing when O'dell's Studios reached out to connect. The ceramics featured in the photos are all GRIT objects. • Throwing big
Throwing bigFrom day one, my aim for GRIT has been to throw big vases and vessels for interiors. It doesn't sound like much of a target, but making ceramics is no easy business and throwing big takes skill and patience to master. Last week, the first batch of what I hope is many larger objects, came out the glaze kiln. It feels like definitive progress and I love the results.

Grit is a london based ceramics brand started by me in 2019. Operating out of Crownworks in Bethnal Green. The objects are thrown on the wheel or built using hand-making techniques. The clay is sourced within the UK (mainly Devon/Cornwall) and produced in Potclay’s panmills and sliphouse in Stoke. After a time working for fashion brands and developing product in South East Asia, I chose the profession of pottery as a way of making more considered products. Commitmed to learning every part of the sequence in making, to create high quality unique objects to be cared for over a lifetime.
