Artist Branching into Graphic Design - Internships?

I'm a recent graduate with a bachelor of arts, and I want to diversify my practice to include more graphic design, typography, and book layout work.

My portfolio is primarily print, which is not serving me in the search for graphic design internships. Are there any internships specifically for artists moving in a design direction? Or should I work on making my portfolio more graphic design heavy on my own first?

  • Latter option! Definitely. And don't just create it for the sake of it. Include projects that you really want to work on. Because graphic design is quite a broad term in itself.
  • I believe the second option "making my portfolio more graphic design heavy on my own first" is more likely to work.
  • Another important thing to do when expanding into graphic design is to network across social media. Posting your design work accross platforms such as Instagram, Behance and LinkedIn will help increase your reach and make you more noticeable for opportunities such as internships

  • I think your last point in your question would be a good starting point if you want to expand to graphic design. One thing that employers will look out for when hiring for internships is your design portfolio. the more diversity and quantity there is in your porfolio, the better chance you have of landing an internship. you can fill your portfolio up by participating in dummy design projects, which can be found on instagram accounts such as @brandbrief or @briefclub.
