As garment tech internships are never advertised, how do I go about trying to secure some sort of a work placement while I study?
I started a part-time garment technology course last month which will end in June 2021, but it only includes a 3 week long work placement. I see that even junior garment technologist vacancies require 3 years+ experience, so I’m extremely anxious about trying to secure some kind of work experience placement ASAP so that I can stand a minuscule chance of getting a paid position by this time next year…hopefully �
Any advice on the kind of companies to approach speculatively will be appreciated.

- Hi Mickalaya, I think often a role can lead into another role and before you know it you are where you desired to be in the first place. I never intended on becoming a garment technologist, but after doing a knitwear product development internship at Pringle of Scotland I sort of fell into my current role. Don’t be afraid to apply for internships, placements and jobs that aren’t necessarily “garment technologist” specific because many collection and product development roles teach you many of the skills needed to then move into a garment technologist area in some capacity. - Hi Mickayala,From my experience one thing that we are lacking in the fashion industry in the UK are garment technologists. My advice to you will be to write a list of companies that you would love to work and write to them directly about how much you love what you do and how keen you are to get a hands on experience in the technical side of garment construction. You ll be suprised how many companies would appreaciate your skills and eagerness to help on the technical side.Linkeln is a great platform to find out people in different companies. This way you can approach other garment technogist managers or pattern makers and check out if they need any help.Best of luck !:)
