  • I chose to study photography at both a level and degree. During my a levels I predominantly did free shoots but have also done some paid ones too. Best way to build portfolio is to ask friends and family.
Networking will take you further, post your work frequently and interact with other photographers.
Invest in gear! If someone’s paying for photos, they will expect high quality printing quality images.
I’d say get involved with a variety of genres to see what your strength is, due to the vast competition out there, it also means your skills are adaptable to shoot different subject matters - so create different portfolios for these
  • It is tough out there with lots of competition bringing prices down - BUT it's always been tough, so use your passion to keep moving through any dips you may have along the way. You'll be told it isn't a career a few times, try to remember that it can and is a career to many. Connect with clients, get your marketing and business processes sorted. You will spend more time doing these things than out and about photographing. From a photographic viewpoint, try becoming a specialist in one field - be the go to person for that (whether it's commercial, pets, weddings etc). Get your portfolio honed to that market. Always happy to try and help where I can, so drop me a line at nick@nickmorrish.com if you want to pick my brains a bit more.
  • I would say, realise there is a lot of competition out there. So on an artistic level create your own distinct style. On a commercial level get connected with the major players and ask/beg for the opportunity. Be prepared to show your work and proof you can do it. Build your portfolio maybe with collaborative work with others such as fashion designers and make up artist students. Initially do it for free or cheap but don't give more than one or two get to know you freebies to the ones who can afford it.
