Construction time again

With the recent death of Andy Fletcher, from Depeche Mode- pioneers of synthpop on the British New Wave scene in the 80s and still a dominant band on the on the electronic scene today, I reflected on why and how we grieve people we didn't meet or know in real life. I guess we form emotional bonds with them, with their work, to fill a hole, to claim a kindred spirit in this lonely world... Depeche Mode have been a soundtrack to my life since I was a little girl.
I remember first seeing the 'It's no Good' video as a 7year old. I was instantly enticed and thought to myself- whatever is going on here, I dig and want to be a part of. The beguiling music, combined with Martin Gore’s Rimbaudesque lyrics referring to themes such as sex, religion and politics and Anton Corbjin’s visualisation of the mysterious image of the band through music video and photography enriched the atmosphere of my adolescence in Bratislava.
It has been an inextricable part of my life and identity ever since and has informed my practice too- Corbjin's ability to give a visual to an atmosphere is something that I strive for in my own work.
After almost 12 years of living in the UK I moved back to my hometown Bratislava to spend time with my remaining family following the death of my father and the pandemic.
So here I am, currently living in Bratislava - bordering Ukraine, an actual war, I return to the UK in November and in many ways, I’ll be starting again.
I work predominantly with digital photography and image manipulation software, but I also do commercial work as a fashion photographer and art director. The climate for all professionals has changed in the last few years. How do I gain more work experience in different environments… that counts, enabling me to broaden my skills. I also want to increase brand awareness of my clothing line, Odd Janko and develop it further in my free time.
How do I re-build my personal and professional network? The world has become more challenging. Moving back here in the autumn of 2020, then the impacts of the pandemic, followed by the war, have changed the way I need to approach my next steps in life.
And so now starts the reality of not quick and not easy and I’m ready for it. I think.
In order to expand my experience and broaden my skills, I need work and work experience where I have the right opportunities. I want to re-vitalise my work and gain more practical experience in a work place or on a creative project in the UK. I love collaborating and really enjoy being exposed to new environments and learning new things.
I’m hoping that The Dots will help me learn from other creatives and help to prepare me for my return to the UK.
Are you a creative professional, navigating a new world? What have you found useful in getting positions where you can both contribute and grow professionally?
