Could use some advice as a newly registered sole trader!

Hi! So I've recently registered as a sole trader (as a photographer) and I could use some advice -

One of the things I am trying to figure out is the best way to track my expenses I can reclaim, as I need to track back about 4 months of expenses. Eg. a new type of editing software, a new camera flash, and also some monthly subscriptions such as adobe, my internet bill, etc. What are some good softwares for this?

What I had in mind was some sort of table, where I can note down expenses, VAT I can get back, dates, and where I can also link the document of the invoice. Excel is a bit funky for that I've found, but I am also not the most knowledgeable on excel. Would Notion be a good option?

Or- are there are accounting software you would recommend for freelance creatives? I tried looking into Xero, but with their plan changes coming up it does confuse me a little bit. Would love to hear feedback from others about Xero!

  • I recommend Quickbooks if you havent tried it already :) They have a section called Quickbooks Self-Employed that I find useful x
