Has anyone got any pointers or insight into how to price freelance projects? I'm new to freelancing so any help is appreciated"

  • A great question Diane!

I've noticed that some practitioners - who've commercialised their offering into defined work packages - display prices on their site. So it's perhaps worth doing some research on 'competitor' websites.

Alternatively, to calculate an hourly or daily rate for your services, you could base this on the average (or top end) salary for the role which would typically perform the project / tasks inhouse, plus extra for your running costs - heating, lighting etc and non-billable time such as doing admin, time on new biz, and holidays.

Perhaps this site is helpful? - https://www.freelancesolutions.co.uk/day-rate-calculator/

Wishing you well on your new journey!
  • There are a few different ways you can package your pricing. For my photography clients I charge a half-day or full day rate. For social media clients I work more on a monthly retainer basis based on how much content they need. I'll normally have a chat with them first about their requirements and then I'll put together some different cost packages for them. If in doubt, go a bit higher - it's better to have room to negotiate down than price yourself too low and then not be making enough. You'll get a feel for it as you gain more freelance projects and experience. Good luck!
