Hello Dots Wondering if anyone has some advice on their preferred workflow for prototype animations? E.g Anima / Principle or AfterEffects?

  • Hey Matt! I am always pondering on this too.

Having tried XD, Figma, ProtoPie and Framer Web i have finally settled on this:

XD + Protopie for hifi prototypes to test "authentic feeling" interactions.
XD integration into protopie is excellent.

Figma for collaborative design work, which ends up being prototyped and tested all in one place. However like mentioned by @Paul Pajot, the auto-animate starts to get buggy and laggy if you connect too many screens.

Although I must say XD + Anima is somewhat of a game-changer too, especially when you want to demonstrate the design for different breakpoints.

Its a "forever quest", but I hope this helps!

  • Hi Matt!

I researched and used almost all interaction design software and the truth is that none is perfect, it just depends on what you want to achieve.

I recommend to import your designs to ProtoPie or FramerWeb as both are powerfull and easy to learn.
You can also test the prototypes with them!

    All the best,
    Aurelian
  • @Paul Pajot thanks Paul - really helpful mate, I’ll look into those!

Yeah I’ve not really come across a service that can offer simple animations or even good quality interaction states (like fixed buttons on scroll) but I’m sure that platform is coming as it is the logical next-step for design software!

At the moment I’m just working with invision / marvel as the base to my work so keen to branch out and use the right tool when time allows to explore other elements of the design.

Thanks again mate! Hope you’re well too!

    Au revoir!
  • Hey matt! Hope you are well Mister :)

    - small interaction (buttons, etc) all the way to 4 pages max journey : principle (as it tends to get heavy and complicated quickly)
    - one off crazy animation for a thank-you screen for example: after-effect then import video in principle
    - Anima: I should give it a try :)

I am looking for a prototype alternative which you can share as a link though - for testing. I know it's asking for the moon as it's heavy therefore a pain to cloud it but I am sure some software are trying to offer that! Any ideas ? I liked the smart-animate feature of figma but if you start doing few screens it gets buggy!

    HAVE A GOOD ONE!
