  • @Toma Prialgauskaite No problem, nice to meet you too!

So, you're not going to get a top-end professional camera for £1000, but that is definitely a decent budget for what you're looking for - not just as a beginner, but as you develop over the next few years.

I would definitely take a look at the Sony A7. You should be able to pick this up for about £800 with a 28-70mm zoom lens included (which you will find very useful as a general purpose lens, and definitely a good option while travelling). I would definitely suggest picking up a 50mm 1.8 lens for about £250, which will be great for potraiture. If you can stretch your budget a little, you may prefer an 85mm 1.8 (around £400) which will be prefect for portraits. Sony has a great range of lenses, which will be really important to you as you grow as a photographer.

If you're comfortable buying used, you could opt for the Sony A7 ii instead (opened but never used models are going for around £800-900 on ebay). This would give you built-in image stabilisation, which you'll find massively helpful for video use!

That's my recommendation anyway, but feel free to ask any questions if it helps you do your own research.
  • @Sushil Nash Hey! Thank you for your questionaire haha and lovely to meet you.

I am looking for something that is good for a little bit of everything. Ideally I need a professional camera which will help me to get the best quality pictures and earn some money (hopefully) ! :D

I will be focusing on portrait photography and product photography mostly:) Also travel photography, maybe just a little bit less..

You must also know that I am a beginner, but I am willing to spend a lot of time working on it.

Thinking of something no more than 1000£.

  • As annoying as this sounds, anyone who answers this without knowing a bit more about you isn't giving you any useful advice.

What kind of photos do you like to take, what do use take them for, what are your photography ambitions going forward (e.g. are you looking to begin a career in photography, is it just for fun, etc), where will you be taking your camera, and - of course, what's your (approximate) budget?
  • I agree with Ian on the Canon r5 and r6 - def look up the specs on them as they can handle recording 8k footage, though the megapixels aren’t as high as for example the much older 5D mkIII. I know a lot of canon users that have switched to the Sony A7 or A9 series too. I’d say it’s a toss up between the Sony’s and the Canons. Have a look at some comparison videos on YouTube, that may help you decide.
  • I use a Nikon D5200, not a pro camera but I get decent results, with a fixed 35mm lens and a 16 - 85mm zoom lens, it gives me a good range of focal lengths. It's fairly sharp with footage as well. I want to upgrade to a pro camera and want to get a Nikon D800, I've heard a lot of good things about these cameras and apparently some film makers are useing them.
  • New Canon r5 and r6 looking good but the heating issues look like an issue in the r5. I switched from Canon to Sony I mostly do photography but I went with the Sony a7iii for the videography abilities of it as well if I needed it. Not used Nikon or Fuji. a7iii is getting old now and I would wait to see if they bring out the a7IV and see what that offers. Figure out what your main use of the camera is for, also might be worth sticking with the system you have and upgrading the body so you can keep the lenses you already have. IF you got budget to go new system and lenses then buy an ok body and spend on the lenses!
