Hey, I’ve recently graduated and just wondering if anyone has some advice on how to start a career in film editing?

  • Just offer editing for projects that look good as editors are always on demand! Good editors are always busy and expensive so if I were you I would work for my showreel. Just make sure these projects are as high production value as possible. Try to find music video and fashion film projects as they are often low budget so it’s a good way into visual storytelling. I hope that helps!
  • Hi Eleanor,

First place to start is by getting work experience at a few different companies.
Once you have 3 - 5 on your CV you are in a good place and also can get a feel for the enviroment.
However all editors start at the same place - as a runner.
Then after a year or 2 you progress to edit assistant.
Here you will learn a lot about the workflow and will help editors with their projects and see them come to life.
You maybe in this role for a few years maybe even 5+.
But you will be able to pick up jobs here and there to edit such as low budget music videos, short documentaries or short films etc.
You'll start building a reel and learning your craft.
Then you will be ready and will become an editor.
It is the best job in the world so hang in there its worth it in the end.
    Trust me.

I'd be happy to give more advice.

    Good luck,
