Hi everyone! Just looking for advice here.

I am working on a creative project/startup (involving publishing a book and creating a community).

I was wondering what are the beginning stages of this in terms of preparing a proposal or a presentation to introduce the idea ? What’s the best software to make such proposal? should I be using indesign? I have so many questions 😭 would love to hear from anyone

    Hello Wuraola,

    I would say that the most important thing is to understand your potential audience.

    Different people will understand information and ideas in different ways and if you are unclear on who your target audience then you should include a combination of styles in your presentations.

    For some people they like really short presentations and others like detailed presentations.

    You could create a number of presentations for different audiences until you are clear on who you are targeting.

    There are three primary ways that people understand information are:
    • Visual
    • Auditory / sound
    • Sensory / feelings

    For people who you are visually inclined you should use:
    • Diagrams
    • Illustrations
    • Infographics
    • Charts
    • Graphs
    • Photography

    For people who are motivated by sounds you should include:
    • Videos
    • Podcasts
    • Speeches
    • Word of mouth
    • Poetry / rhymes / lyrics / music

    For people who are inclined by feelings you should use:
    • Vision (inspiring others by explaining what will happen in the future)
    • Pleasure (Associating your venture to pleasurable emotions of others)
    • Freedom from pain (Showing how your venture can solve problems of your market)

    Ideally you would want to include a mixture of those styles until you are very sure who you are speaking to.

    If you are looking to present to potential investors then you would need to demonstrate how your idea/venture would be able to generate a return on their investment, so having financial information, projections would be valuable there.

    In terms of software, Indesign would be a good choice because you could create PDF documents that are widely able to be viewed on any device and you can integrate text, graphics, photography, charts, etc with it.
    You should also think of having compelling video content as well as that is more appealing to younger audiences.

    Everything depends on who you are targeting and those are some ideas that should help you to get your message across.

    Good luck and if things do not work out at first, keep going and change your approach until you succeed.
