Hi, I am looking for help with building my media career...

I have just completed an AS level at college for it and I am passionate about it so I am more than happy to share what I have produced, however I am really struggling on what to do next, I don't want to stay in college as I am 18 now so I want to be able to jump straight into work and gain experience but I don't know where to start! I am interested in marketing, radio, presenting and I would also like to try modelling. I am hoping someone might be able to help me and give me some advice

  • Hello Caitlin,

A good way to start is to look at the people who you admire in your desired fields and look at how they got started. Obviously everyone’s journey will be different although there are always things to learn from those who have gone before you.

Reach out to them and remember that you may have to reach out to 100 to get a good response from one of them, persistence is a key quality of what it takes when you are starting out. Have fun and remember that you may have to sift through a lot a dirt to find those gold nuggets.

Another way is to look for representation, model agencies, talent agencies, etc. you should look to build a showreel, portfolio of yourself, and you can start by getting on social media platforms, TikTok, YouTube, IG, Snapchat, etc, and build a following organically, you are young so you have time to spend building a loyal following and building a strong reputation.

Also only work with established talent and model agencies because there are lots of scams and unscrupulous people who take advantage of young people trying to make it in the media industries.

Develop a niche that makes you stand out from other people, maybe it’s your personality, delivery style, looks, content, and use that to your advantage.

For marketing opportunities you can apply as an intern for agencies and companies that interest you. You have an advantage if you are save with what is happening right now with younger demographics and you will have an advantage over other people who have experience, but are detached from what younger consumers are doing.

Internships are not well paid, although if you can intern at the right type of agency that should open doors in the media world. Try model agencies, music companies, social media companies, media companies, etc.
Also remember that there are no rules, go with what you feel, do not be afraid to try new things out.

Remember that you can only fail if you quit, when things do not go to plan they are learning experiences.

I hope that helps and if you need anything else then give me a shout.

    Have a great day.
  • Passion is great, experience is better. Whichever of the interests you choose to follow whether it's 1 of them or multiple you're going to find experience and being able to show that experience will be the key in getting you into that industry.

Excluding modelling, college and university are the conventional route for marketing, radio or presenting (TV?). If you are choosing not to go down this route it might be worth looking at apprenticeships or gaining recognised online qualifications.

Good starting point is the skills toolkit which offers free courses https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/find-a-course/the-skills-toolkit

Would also recommend looking at LinkedIn Learning, Skillshare and of course the school of YouTube and TikTok. The last two take advice from some creators with a pinch of salt.

Once you have some demonstratable work/pre-requisites for the industry you're interested in then it will be easier to approach and gain industry experience so you can earn more and climb higher.

    Hope that all makes sense.
