Hi! I'm a recent film graduate looking to work in the camera dept. with the aim to one day DP. Does anyone have advice for starting out?

Also if anyone is in need of a camera trainee, I would be very interested! I am based in the UK, mainly in Edinburgh, Scotland.

  • Hi Gemma!
    1. Create a network around you, that is going to be more useful than any skill you might acquire in the future. Other DPs, Directors, Producers, APs.
    2. Go on Mandy.com as Ana suggested, but remember 90% of jobs there are under-paid, mainly students' short film projects. Sometimes it's just not worth it, you'll find yourself with nothing but scrap footage, working 15 hours a day and nothing interesting for you to use for a showreel.
    3. It's sad to say that a majority of production houses (especially outside UK) would never consider hiring a woman for a DP job. It's something we all try to fight every day but it's a sad reality. Though there are a lot of amazing Women DP around the globe and you should contact them if they are around, like: https://www.instagram.com/the_rinayang/ https://www.instagram.com/katereiddp/ https://www.instagram.com/katearizmendi/ (she is 2nd Unit DP on DUNE) https://www.instagram.com/kateeccarius/ https://www.instagram.com/dianaolifirovadop/ https://www.instagram.com/nathalie_p/
    4. Try to get a relation with local hire houses. They might offer you to test cameras, lenses, grip and accessories so you can be fully aware of the latest industry technologies available. More importantly, they might put you in contact with other people in the industry and grow your network.

    Hope this will help you!
  • Hi I would recommend you go to film crew and film network groups on facebook, you can get mentors but I cant remember which fb page it was. Maybe you already know of this webpage? - https://www.screenskills.com/ it is useful to understand roles and how to approach employers but wouldnt use it to find jobs, I have used Mandy.com in the past too but havent got much luck neither, I would say go look in facebook!
