Hi, Im looking to break into freelance writing and need some recs on where to find oppitunities.

I'm a NCTJ fashion journalist and I want to find more freelancing opportunities whilst i look for a more permanent position. All the call outs ect I find are based in America and so don't work for me. I've tried pitching but I struggle to find the right people to send the pitches to and I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on where to find call outs if freelancing opportunities? Thanks

  • @Faraday Gamble-Gittings hey Faraday, I’m an editor (though not in fashion sadly) but my advice would be to find the magazines or platforms where you love reading and reach out to the editorial team. Put your pitch ideas in the subject with ‘PITCH: xxxx xxxxx’ and link to some of your writing - even if unpublished.
  • Hi Faraday,
I don't know what the market's like for journalism at the moment, but the copywriting market is struggling right now. Lots of freelancers, very little work and I think many people are pitching and getting nowhere.

But there is a writer on Substack who shares freelance writing jobs in her newsletter. Many of them are editorial/journalism jobs, so it might be worth a look: https://freelancewritingjobs.substack.com

Hope helpful, and best of luck!

  • @Stela Awuor I want to get into fashion journalism or just journalism in general but all the pitches are based in America that I have seen sadly- I have been pitching to magazines and relevant publications too but I rarely get a response
  • It depends on the field you intend to venture there is the academic field
    Article field
    Copywriting
Writing is a wide ocean you just have to be specific about the fish you intend to get from the writing ocean
