Hi! nice to see so many creatives in one place! I really enjoy video editing but have no idea how to get into the career, any advice?

  • @Simon K Matthews thank you for taking the time to give me advice!
  • Editing is a very particular trade, for there are both an artistic and a technical aspect related to it. I've edited features, scripted TV, realiy TV, adverts and music promos and despite the differences, you have the order of the scenes (the montage) and how long they last (the editing) to think of. But I think Walter Murch explains it much better in his book ("In th blink of an eye"). I believe the rest is just public relations, but this is just my opinion.

  • The long and short of it is to get editing and build a showreel of work.

You will find loads of film makers needing editors for short films or trailers on sites such as Shooting people, Mandy.com etc and yes it will be unpaid or low pay but sadly only way to build up experience.

And the more varied things you do the more you will figure out your niche.

Other route is to move into a post house and work you way up.

    Good luck
