Hi! Reaching out to all Art Directors: what qualifications/skills are essential to progressing your career into Art Direction?

- @John Yorke Thank you for your advice, this is really helpful information. I'll be sure to check out the links you provided. Many thanks!
- @Joana Kabakaite if you would like to become an advertising creative, be it Art Director or Copywriter, you will be hired on basis of the ideas shown in your spec portfolio, your personality and little else.As you progress, you will more and more rely on work that has actually made it into the real world, but starting out it is much more important to show your creative thinking with spec campaigns, rather than including real world work you have been involved in that is less creatively interesting in your book.If you are taking your first steps towards a career as an Art Director I suggest you partner with an aspiring Copywriter who is in the same position as yourself and take it from there. It is posible to be hired as an individual, but it is very much still the norm for advertising agencies to hire creative teams. You can shout out here on The Dots to find a writer to work with, or take a look at singlecreatives.com to find other individuals looking to partner up.The Young Creative Council has great tips to get you started youngcreativecouncil.com Or just keep asking questions here.
- @John Yorke Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my post and share your thoughts on this.I am interested in progressing my career in Advertising Art Director role and was wondering what extra steps I can take or learn to be more fitted for the role e.g. is experience in management essential for Art Director role? Or could creative digital design course boost my chances in achieving this goal.I am very interested in hearing everyones experiences within Art Director roles and how they progressed into this role. All the best
- Hi Joana,No qualifications are needed. If you are asking specifically for Advertising Art Director roles, basic drawing or Photoshop skills will help you communicate your ideas but, unless you want to be the creator too, nothing else is essential.
