  • It's not easy at the start, there's a couple of ways you can go on about it. One is find some recuiters that can put you forward for jobs.

Two is to market yourself and find your own clients. That can range of course, so it's worth thinking about who you want as clients? Where are they at? Can you find them online or offline? This might help you narrow down a bit and be a bit more specific. Maybe you can find a nieche?

Another option is to start with your own network. Tell your family and friends about your services, word of mouth is key in this industry. Lastly you can venture out and maybe start locally? Offer your services within your local area. Does anybody need help with anything? Ask and find out.

Lastly. Networking! I got a few jobs by attending online events last year, hopefully more real life ones will start again too.

In terms of imposter syndrome confidence, I found that having a mentor helped me greatly. There's a few options such as Kerning the Gap, Who's your Momma, Ladies Wine Design London might also be doing it.

These are some of the things I've tried myself, hope it helps.
  • Hey Catherine! I know how you feel, I kinda feel lost sometime as a freelancer illustrator and graphic designer. It‘s such a versatile industry and defenitely there should be more freelance opportunities for people like us, especially when starting our career. But so far I have found more freelance jobs here on The Dots than everywhere else. LinkedIn is kinda terrible for the creative insdutry and doesn‘t have much freelance jobs. Fiverr and upwork are really hard to use and grow on untill you get successful. Instagram also is hard to grow on, in order to do that you defenitely would need to promote yourself there.
But I do recommend to keep using The Dots, send your portfolio and Curriculum every week for freelance and/or remote jobs and seach on the ask section as regularly as possible for jobs.
And of course don‘t forget to build a great portfolio, especially one that suits the kind of roles you want to get and companies that you would like to work on.
If you want I can even check out your portfolio and comment on it, maybe I could help you.
  • It’s a really difficult time so try not to be too hard on yourself, I’m kind of in the same boat, my advice is to post your portfolio to places like the dots to get objective feedback on your folio, and to join Facebook groups such as Panimation, see no evil, festivus, she drew that, as I’ve had a lot of work through these pages and they’re great communities to be involved in. Try and make the self initiated projects you enjoy making for your folio in the time being and just try and be as proactive as you can, set goals you can achieve everyday whether it’s creating art or sending an email to a company you want to work for and just keep going!
