How did you get into the publishing industry?

I'm new to this site and don't know if I can find the support I need. Publishing doesn't come up as a profession tag at the bottom so I don't know if I'll get anywhere!

I am looking for advice and support around entering the publishing industry. My goal when I left university was to move down South and try my best to get into publishing, but for personal reasons that never came to be. Instead, I got whatever work experience I could at local or nearby publishers and became a copy editor/proofreader, which I did for 3 years. Now, I'm a campaigner and comms officer for an organisation. However, the desire and pull to be part of the publishing industry is still there.

I have been trying to get some advice and support around getting a foot in the door in the publishing industry. I'm aware that I'm at a disadvantage from being in the North of England trying to break into this industry. Most publishing houses I have contacted up here don't have opportunities because they are very small or don't get back to me. I've done work experience at the few that I could in the past. I am aware that HarperCollins is opening up offices in Manchester but again, I'm finding it hard to get advice from anyone there either.

I just wondered if you had any advice or could point me in the right direction for some support.

Thanks in advance!

  • I luckily did my placement year at an independent publishing house abroad - I wasn't having any luck finding anything in the UK or locally that I thought might as well take a leap and do it elsewhere. I would constantly refresh ifyoucouldjobs.com (amongst other job search portals) and came across an unpaid internship at a very local independent publishing house. Granted, being unpaid, I had to take up a couple secondary jobs to maintain myself and pay rent, but the experience in itself was so valuable and resourceful: I learned so much about the industry, methods of working, and made networks. It's difficult financially, physically, socially and mentally to start from scratch, but internships are a wonderful starting point. Hope this helps :)
