How do I stay involved and should I ask to get paid?
In the wake of the BLM protests and toppling of statues, I recently launched an online petition to raise a statue/sculpture of former Norwich City footballer Justin Fashanu, who was, and remains, the first openly gay professional to play in the top league of English football.
The campaign has attracted criticism - mainly from trolls - and the attention of the local press (I wrote an article that was published in the Eastern Daily Press about the reason why I launched the campaign), the city council, and Norwich City Football Club. In a recent meeting that I was invited to attend the consensus is the idea should be realised, and a fundraising campaign launched. I am concerned that I may be set adrift while people with more clout than I have take over.
I wrote and sent to the editor an outline of why I should be involved, as well as drafts for a nationwide artist callout for the statue/sculpture commission, artist application form, terms and conditions. My experience as a creative-minded person, exhibiting artist, organiser and curator of a group show, writer - albeit only with two published articles - are useful and valuable to the campaign because I'm bringing a specialised knowledge to the table (I've a BA (Hons) Fine Art, an MA Art History and Theory).
I'm currently receiving welfare, which is essential, and has helped me focus on writing, and doing something positive. I've always struggled with the notion of how to go about earning income using my creative skills and ideas. I've had two unsolicted articles published in the Eastern Daily Press in four weeks.
This opportunity, ironically that I've begun, is incredibly valuable to me as it will allow me to use my talents, skill, and ideas in a very public way and with reputable organisations.
