HOW GIANT ARE YOU? Wk 9: How your routine affects your well-being

I was chatting to a young GP friend of mine this week. We’d just finished a punishing workout in our local park & he was reflecting on how crucial exercise was to his well-being, particularly given the nature of his work.

We agreed that routine & rhythms of work, rest & play are crucial to our mental health. But we also agreed that routine alone isn’t enough. That routine needs to matter to us.

Many of us have a regular 9-5 weekday routine. It’s what we do for work.

But if that work is drudgery, if we’re only there to pay the bills, if we don’t feel as if we’re contributing to something worthwhile, something transcendent beyond ourselves & our existence, then that routine is more likely to negatively impact our well-being than not.

For work to serve us emotionally & mentally, it needs to matter to us.

At its highest, work can connect to our values, our ideals, & the way we believe the world should be. Assuming the actors involved in that aren’t spoiling things for us(!) then that routine can leave us feeling satisfied & fulfilled.

But at its worst, our work can be soul-destroying & a chore that leaves us feeling trapped & only half alive.

Now your own work probably falls somewhere between these two extremes.

Thankfully, changing this script so that work feels more uplifting can start with us, by reframing what our work means & who it matters to.

Of course, we can always negotiate to see if we can adjust our job description so that it plays more to our strengths.

But if that isn’t possible, then an attitude adjustment can be just as powerfully effective in changing our lives.

“How we spend our days is of course how we live our lives…” (Annie Dillard, US writer).
