How many of you know what a custom-made font brings to a brand or event and how rewarding this work is for both parties, client & creator?

  • @Luke Freeman Good analysis Luke, I think the uses (print, web, app etc) of a custom font should not to be thought like for a retail font (who by the way is a mess - company size again is the best - Inthink). I consider the price with number of styles needed and company size - doesn't matter if it's used on a digital product.
Other point is the human side. When you are commissioned to design a custom font, often, the client is eager to know about type story, visual details, tech specs and it's really interesting to share.
It'a also a good way to support our works.
  • Having a custom made font can be expensive depending on the family of weights and usage (print, web, app). This also depends on the brand aswel as fonts have to behave differently.

Dalton Maag Lush font, which it had to be different everytime you typed it to behave to have alternate letters of each letter “glyphs”

Moving on another point the EULA which is an agreement between the user/brand on buying a licencing a font which can be costly, i.e. web fonts you pay per how much views your site gets. For big brands that could be costly. Having a bespoke font can cut the cost in the future, means the font has to stand the test of time with unique style shape of letters etc --- whilst reflecting the brands style.

Also you get the chance to name the font as Durex is called “One Night Sans”. But does mean no one else can use the font or replicate your brand as now days fake fashion goods don’t have access to brand font as it’s not something that is commerical. LVMH are good at this as they use a lot of custom fonts for the brands they own.

And NO I CAN’T GIVE OUT BRAND FONTS
