How to Find an Independent Agent for Freelance Illustration and Graphic Design Gigs?

I'm an Illustrator and Graphic Designer eager to broaden my freelance opportunities, I'm on the lookout for an independent agent who can help me navigate the world of freelance gigs.

If you have any insights, advice, or if you are an independent agent actively looking for new talents to represent, I would greatly appreciate any guidance you could provide. How did you find your agent, or do you have tips on where I can start my search? Any recommendations or experiences you can share would be immensely helpful.

  • Hey April, when I first started freelacing as an Illustrator the best way I discovered agents was looking through the portfolios of Illustrators that I liked and searching in their Contact or About sections - from there I could take a look at their agents (if they had one) and see what kind of artists they represented and was there anyone similar to what I was doing.

One thing to remember is to think about the kind of work you want to do as an Illustrator (book design, magazines, adverts, packaging, all of the above!) and try to find an agent that has a proven record of working with those clients. Most agents will work on all types project, some agents will work mainly with editorial clients or book projects or animation only - take a look at what kind of work their artists do to get a feel for the kind of clients they have and whether it's a fit for you.

From here you can start to tailor your portfolio to look attractive to these kinds of agents and then it's just the hard work of emailing and reaching out to your list of agents.

    Good luck!!!
