How to start a graphic design portfolio

I'm interested in working as a graphic designer but don't have a portfolio yet and not sure how to fill it up with projects. Do you have to make up your own briefs or do unpaid work? Can you put a digital illustration in you just did for fun?

I have a portfolio of other types of design projects which are less relevant. Any tips appreciated

  • Hi Alia, the best advice I can give you is to start making a plan regarding what it is you want to show to potenital customers/clients? And how do you plan on selling it to them? What is your strong point? What do you get the most enjoyment out of creating and what do you feel you need to 'learn' to do, in order to go after new clients, who may not be into your style? Just like a military manoeuvre, get out a few sheets of paper and a pen or pencil and ask yourself the questions I've listed above. Yes and an online portfolio is the way to go along with creating a PDF file showing examples of your work that can be flicked through by an interviewer.
  • I’m developing an art portfolio. It has taken a year of practice, learning, errors. But now confidence and quality are up, I feel ready to present (and keep growing the work).
Art will differ, but my approach… developing collections eg 4 images rooted from one theatrical photoshoot, 6 sculptures with similar materials and motifs, a series of ink works on mental well-being.
I.e. Developing a body of work across styles and themes core to my work.

Along with a 250 (max) bio, an easy to read CV (not easy given project based history), I can select a few thumbnails from each collection and then larger images that relate to the intended reader/audience.

Additionally, the plan is to make a website which functions as a portfolio and shop.
