I am looking to pursue a degree in Graphic design and I open to work that could help me build my portfolio.

Guidance on how to build an impressive porfolio would be much appreciated too

  • Hello Daniel,

To build an impressive graphic design folio you will need to demonstrate a few things:
    • An ability to solve design problems for the end client
    • The ability to communicate clearly to the end user / audience
    • A solid understanding of layout, hierarchy, colours, balance, typography, and imagery
    • It helps to understand the fundamental rules, and how to push beyond them
A few really books for laying the foundations of modern typography are:
    • Typography by Emil Ruder
    • Grid Systems in Graphic Design by Josef Müller-Brockmann
    • The New Typography by Jan Tschichold

Another good resource to have would be anything that incorporates the golden ratio, or Phi sequences, it is sometimes known as sacred geometry and it has been used since the time that the ancient Pyramids were built, so any information on that will help as the same ratios are used today in every aspect of design from supercars to logos of huge corporations.

Here are a few designers and agencies that are good to study for their use of typography, some are:
    • The Graphic Language of Neville Brody I & II
    • David Carson The End of Print
    • Anything by The Designers Republic
    • Anything by Wim Crouwel
    • Anything by Matt Wiley
    • Plus X
    • Studio Petronio
    • Stockholm Design Lab
    • Mash Creative
    • Superfiction
    • Kurppa Hosk Design
    • R/GA Design

Then it is about finding your own style, I see that you are a photographer so being able to work with imagery and typography will be a very important part of your communication, some designers will focus on typogragphy only, and others will use illustration, there is a lot there, so have fun, check out design resources, follow inspirational designers on IG, Pinterest, Behance, etc.

Good luck and have a great day.
