i'm going to apply to Fine Art at UAL and wondering if anyone with experience with conceptual work could give me some portfolio feedback?

  • @Victoria Pullen thank you so much for your advice, it’s really helpful as i want to apply to the course at Chelsea as well! i don’t have an online portfolio as of yet but if you email me at: zinamacwilliams@gmail.com i can send you a few portfolio entries i’m considering x
  • Hi Zina! I just graduated from Fine Art at Chelsea UAL, so maybe I can help out. Do you have a link to your portfolio?

In terms of preparing your portfolio for application, I would say to include lots of experimentation that shows you're interested in exploring different ways of how a concept can be communicated, and the process being just as important as the final destination. Include a few examples of your sketchbook if you have some interesting pages that demonstrate how you respond to research! At Chelsea there was a big focus on letting process and exploration guide you, and often we were discouraged from thinking about a 'final piece' in advance, which can sometimes be daunting if you're used to working that way, but helps you move on from project-based working to a continuous, coherent practice that constantly builds on itself.

As a multimedia artist focused more on concepts than a particular specialism, I organised my portfolio by theme and let that take the lead, demonstrating how the concept builds and develops while also showing your best work. It's a good idea to mention any key concepts and important research you're working on in the personal statement -- this will supplement your online portfolio submission, as you won't get a chance to explain your work until you're invited to interview.

    Good luck!
  • @Glen Paul Mendes thank you! this is very helpful and i will definitely keep it in mind
  • UAL is about makers and you need an online portfolio strong in theme yet experimental they like to see a lot of flexibility and not someone too precious or limited, unless you have famliy connections and a set up within the art gallery system or art fairs or have an artist or collector patron.
fine art artists are practicle everything has reason a place a time logic, ie a red cloth in woodlands needs to have these things what is it saying maybe it is actually a magazine photo article about extinction, you need to show this as well as a secret side some area of art you would like to excell in but feel that your work is not strong enough, they love to help and nurture all the better to develop you as a newby, they do not like finished or perfect as there is nothing to say...it is finished, present a mess and they will talk about the struggle of art all day long.
