I'm looking for some feedback on my website/portfolio/online platform? If anyone has a moment, it would be greatly https://www.linseym.com/

My website is a mash up of a place to showcase previous projects and share articles but can feel messy/disjointed and often like nothing is getting seen as there is no focus (other than many projects)
I'd like to change it going forward but not 100% what/how to do this.

* Streamline it (this is tricky as I would like to showcase photography/writingprojects)
• Change the layout/templates and the way its showcased (more like photography projects or tumblr style?)
* Turn it into a online magazine or similar
• Focus on one thing or seperate projects

Any ideas/advice would be appreciated! :) Thank you

  • @Dorrell Merritt Thank you so much for taking the time to give feedback and your observations, its exactly what I am looking for and very helpful.

Thanks for the comments about interesting projects too, appreciated.

    a) 100% its tricky to know how to do this sometimes - it can seem people give themselves titles nowadays. I don't put journalist, as I'm not trained or professional (writing for specific titles) or photographer, as I don't do it full time or studied it but love photography.
Definitely agree regarding something like, 'I am a creative interested in.....'
this is why I added the curious communicator, as I thought it reflected what I'm into but it feels wishy washy. Your comments about this are super helpful!

b). Thanks again for this, it really does and this is the thing, initially it was set up to be an extra layer to a CV and as projects were slipping unnoticed, however, I prefer informal and sharing ideas, so has become a mish mash. Other feedback previously has been to only showcase certain projects or have seperate websites, which would be more work/management.
Love your ideas about Reflections/Journal and appreciate them.

    c) Love doing this but always end up with so many and styles I like but its always useful to do with anything, will revisit some and see if it helps :) I haven't really used Cargo collective but will definitely check it out.

After all this, I often feel it might be better to not even have a webiste or continue to showcase projects, as it feels like such a lot to get work across sometimes, it has to be done in a specific way etc....
either way, your comments are SO helpful.
Informal and sharing information is more my style.

Checked out your site too and it is great, love the way you list your projects and a visual appears too, very clear and visually appealing.

Have a great day and thanks again for taking the time to give such brilliant feedback.
  • Hey Linsey,

Just passing by with my two cents.

There are some really interesting projects on there, across many different ideas and approaches. I had three things that came to mind in terms of feedback:

    a) Your 'about' doesn't tell visitors about you as a practitioner— are you a journalist, who also happens to take photos? Are you a photographer and a writer? Or a journalist and a writer? Or none of the above, but something else? I think even if you don't want to title yourself formally or as literally as 'I am a journalist' you should at least reference directly your interest in writing and sharing voices and perspectives i.e. 'I am a London-based creative, interested in travel, wellbeing and art, as well as amplifying the voice of other creative people etc'.

    b) The site itself seems 50-50 between a portfolio website and a blog; depending on how you want to market yourself, it could be helpful for you and your audiences to make it one or the other. It would be worth working out: do you want to showcase your work? Or do you want to have a space to share ideas and experiences in a less formal way? Not saying it can't be both, but it's just a bit of a harder sell and I think in 2023 it's harder to get away with something that's less defined. Perhaps, for instance, it could be a site primarily showcasing works like 'Tell me about your tattoo' and the Brett Electric interview under a section entitled 'Projects' with another section entitled 'Reflections'/'Journal' where you could share about your more personal projects like the health and wellbeing work.

    c) I think it could be useful to look at some other writers/journalists/creatives that you like or like the work of and see how they present their works/describe themselves on their websites, making notes of things you like and don't like— it will be useful for working out both how to showcase your own projects and market yourself too. I'm not saying you should use Cargo Collective as it might not be right for what you're looking for, but I love it, and for me when I've worked on my site in the past, seeing their 'sites in use' (https://cargo.site/In-Use) helped me a lot in terms of working out the best way to present my work, especially across text and images too.

Anyway, take it all with a pinch of salt, and I hope it's able to help a little :)
  • Hi Linsey, you have a great content and it’s a beautiful project. I felt you can have a picture of yourself introducing yourself somewhere maybe in your main page or about page. It’s always nice to see the person behind the blog/website so that people can know who you are :) hope this helps.
