I've been translating and subtitling on a pro-bono basis for few companies (ie.TED). I would like to launch my career. Any tips?

- Hi. I'm wondering, first of all, why you've been doing it pro bono - can't TED afford to pay you? (I'm very keen that translators get remunerated for the work they do - it's not easy, and people do take advantage!). Can I suggest you have a look at the website of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (iti.org.uk) and possibly the American Translators' Association (I think it's called - I think it's ata.org) for tips on starting out?ITI has a Setting up as a translator course or something similar, which might be useful. It's also been producing a number of webinars which might be of help. Another good source of webinars is the Chartered Institute of Linguists, which I think is ciol.org.uk, although I may be wrong. I'd certainly recommend looking at the professional instutitions for advice first of all.

- Hello Naomi,I have been using a couple of platforms for freelancers such as Upwork and Freelancer.com. There are several clients that ask for subtitles and translations. I suggest that you create a profile with a detailed portfolio of what you have done so far (you can also add clients' feedback). At the beginning it's pretty competitive as there are lots of translators that have been on the platform for ages, but subtitling is a very specific field and I think you'll find the right project.
