  • Mary Seacole would be a wonderful addition. She was a British-Jamaican nurse during the Crimean War, who took the initiative to go out on her own after the War Office refused to send her with the other nurses. Much of her work has been obscured by historians’ focus on Florence Nightingale. Her autobiography is called ‘Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands’.
  • Hi there! Here are a few great UK Black historical figures.

Una Marson -the first Black woman employed by the BBC. She hosted the radio show 'Caribbean Voices' during World War II.

Dr Harlod Moody - he had his own GP's practise in Peckham South London in1913 and in 1931 was a founding member of 'The League of Coloured People'. The organisation campagned for race equality here in the UK (years before Martin Luther King who is more commonly known).

Lilian Bader - the first Black/Mixed race woman to join the British Armed Forces in 1941.

Samuel Coleridge Taylor - a world class Classical music composer and Professor who toured America playing at The White House.
