I wrote, filmed & produced a poem called Distant Homeland, exploring existence, identity, assimilation and belonging. Would love feedback!

what I found throughout the process of shooting for this poem is that symbolism is all around. these shots are from parts of south and east london. the mundane.. the things we walk past everyday. all of these shots helped to depict my ideas in some way, and the archive footage from kinolibrary provided that connection to the past.

I wanted to capture the grittiness of london in a way that shows how unhomely it can be.. an in-between space. whether it be places I used to live, places I pass each day or places that I had never been before, certain themes always seemed to repeat themselves.

london provided the perfect backdrop for the words I had thought about & written time ago but needed illustrating. words on identity, belonging, assimilation and existence.

the process of making this allowed me to examine what my relationship is with london in an exploratory way. learnt some new things, deaded some perceptions and cemented others. but it was fun and rewarding all the same

  • @Faith Angwet Hi Faith, thank you for your comments. yes the sound was very DIY so in future I will definitely work on sound for next time!

Thankyou! That particular clip is one I filmed from my mother's ancestral village in Uganda, I wanted to explore how growing up in the UK has shaped my identity but too how there is an element of disconnect when referring to the "African diaspora". Thank you for watching!
  • @Simonetta Gibejova thank you so much for your comments, I really appreciate it! for my next piece, I will definitely take your comments onboard!
  • I totally love it and second Simonetta’s advice, she is a trained actress after all.
I would also recommend if you had a sound engineer reduce the echo a little bit, as it is a bit sharp sound in some places-I do podcast/voiceover scripts at times, so the focus is on smoothing different pitch sounds out.
Apart from that Ian, great visuals and glad you are in it-thanks for representing the Motherland so well, you have done Africa proud, presenting it out to the wider western world!
  • It is a very enjoyable project! I’d definitely like it longer and maybe give yourself time before you start performing the poem, so we can feel the vibe from your visuals first and then the voice would enter.
