In a Kickstarter to raise funds to print the first issue of Mothership Mag, what rewards would you like to see & how much would you pledge?

Mothership Magazine is a print publication exploring counter-cultures from the 1950s to the present day. Heavily inspired by the underground press and 70's titles like OZ, Crawdaddy, and Nova in their tone and design, Mothership's first offering - 'The How To Get Enlightened Issue' - includes features on the Aetherius Society (a church based in West London's leafy Parson's Green that worships aliens), a 'Get a Hole, Get Ahead' manifesto by Bore Hole author, Joey Mellen (who successfully trepanned himself in the 60s), as well as a reflective on anarchist and social activist, Abbie Hoffman, and the day he led thousands of protesters to exorcise and levitate the Pentagon.

Spanning across sections on art, music, fashion, mocked retro interior spreads, fake ads, 70s inspired recipe cards. Mothership will be 140 pages of beautifully designed, switched-on long-form journalism that informs, critiques, and invites its readers to achieve their own idea of enlightenment in 2020.

  • Hey Hannah,

If counter-culture is the core element of mothership then I would have thought that experiences would be a key reward. They'd likely be at the higher end of the price scale, but if you're uncovering interesting and off-beat cultures, where possible, it could be a cool extension of your brand to provide an opportunity for readers to get fully immersed in them.

Obviously that will be tricky in some instances, but in others could be really fun. There's also huge opportunity on the product and design front. If you're researching that 70's vibe, could you extend the recipie card idea to "society" patches, whether they're about alien worshipping or trepanning? Visually, there's a lot of fun to be had with that era and with the 60s-80s constantly referenced in fashion and culture, you could definitely catch the eye with some tongue-in-cheek fictional societies/fan clubs.

    Hope that helps!
